Debonair was professionally built in Wilmington, California by Don Ward at the end of his career at the Fellows and Stewart Shipyard in 1973. The boat was designed by naval architect Edson Schock. “Edson Schock’s design career is characterized by its diversity – he drafted racing power boats, motor yachts, racing and cruising sailboats, military and government craft, as well as a variety of commercial vessels such as freighters, tugs, and fishing boats” (from Mystic Seaport Museum). The vessel was built with high quality materials and workmanship and she has been well-maintained and upgraded throughout her life by her loving owners, several of which were Shipwrights. She was also owned by a well-regarded Santa Barbara artist who sailed her twice to Hawaii and who took second place in the Split Rig Class of the SF – Maui race in 1985 who said “She was a beautiful trade wind sailor…more like an ocean going train than a boat!”

The current owners, one being a career Boatwright and Ship Preservationist at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, purchased the boat in 2011 in California with the intention to sail aboard with their family around the South Pacific. Between the current owners, and other professional Boatwright’s in the Bay Area they completed a 6-year refit on the boat in 2017 and set out on their voyage which they completed in 2019. They’ve spent the last few years sailing between the PNW and Alaska.

On Deck:

The Decks are easy to maneuver upon fore and aft with lots of good hand holds. There are Mast Pulpits at the base of the Main Mast for safe sail tending. The Cockpit is easy to enter and comfortable with Full Cockpit Cushions, Pedestal Wheel Steering and great visibility. (See ‘Other Details’ for Systems and Equipment)

Accommodations:

Going down below through the companionway hatch takes you down into an Aft Cabin Area with a Double Berth to port, a Navigation Station with a Seat, and Lots of Storage to starboard in drawers and cabinets and aft under the Companionway Steps. The Engine Room is directly below the Aft Cabin Floor Boards with great access.

Going forward from the Aft Cabin takes you into the Galley to port that is U-Shaped with a Stainless Sink, 3-Burner Stove and Oven, Large Refrigerator, Dish Drying Area and lots of storage in cubbies and drawers. The Salon is forward of the Galley with a Single Settee to starboard, Book Shelves and a large U-Shaped Dinette to port that converts to a Double Berth. There is lots of storage in and around the Saloon area. Another Single Pipe Berth can be set up in the Galley Area.  The cabin is kept warm by a Dickinson Diesel Heater that’s bulkhead mounted.

Forward of the Salon to port is the Head with a LaVac Marine Toilet, Sink, Mirror and Storage. Across from the Head to starboard is a Hanging Locker.

All the way forward are two Bunks to port, a Hanging Locker and Cubbies to starboard as well as a Line Storage Area and forward of the Bunks is the Chain Locker Access.

Last Haul Out and Bottom Paint: 2023

Standing Rigging: 2018

Debonair has been methodically and professionally maintained and upgraded and is in ‘cruise-ready’ condition for her next owners. Note from the current owners: Debonair has taken us thousands of miles. She turns heads wherever she goes, and shapes all of us who are lucky enough to sail aboard her. Debonair sails beautifully, her long waterline making her relatively fast, and her full keel giving her a comfortable motion at sea.

Owner’s Manuals, Vessel History and Pictures are included with the vessel purchase.

Showings available by request, thank you!
